The sun <\/strong>is the symbol of Mithra<\/strong>. Mithra was an angel of the former religion (Zoroastrianism)<\/em> of the Kurds and other Iranian people. According to Zoroastrianism, on December 21, Mithra has shown his power and dominion and proclaimed the message of light – therefore he was seen as the saviour of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The<\/strong> Yalda<\/strong> (from the Aramaic “birth”) Night <\/strong>is on December 21st and the first night of winter. On this night the winter solstice takes place, making it the longest night in the northern hemisphere. After the solstice the light slowly reappears and the days become longer. The Yalda-Night is celebrated like the Newroz feast by many people in the Middle East. The snow is seen as a sign of fertility. This night was always important among Kurds. The Kurds as well as other people celebrate with richly set tables, the reading of poems and stories and singing together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kurds from Sanandaj call this night \u015eew\u00e7ile (Night of the Forty, refers to the beginning of one of the two 40-day winter months in the Kurdish calendar). They prepare sultanas, quinces, pears, apples and melons 3 months before the night. They pickle melons, bury them underground for 3 months and take them out again for the Yalda celebration. They eat traditional dishes such as sour melons<\/em><\/strong> and rolled cabbage leaves<\/strong><\/em>. Besides these, they also prepare pomegranates and dane-gezo.
Preparation of dane-gezo:<\/span> Wheat (dane) is fried in a pan, mixed with a kind of syrup (gezo) and eaten.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents from Mahabad, Naghadeh, Piranshar and Oshnaviyeh meet, sing various Kurdish songs and read poems. They believe that if it snows or rains, it will be a fertile year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kurds from Khorasan call this night \u00c7ilekil\u00fb<\/em><\/strong> (Great \u00c7ile). Family members prepare pomegranate seeds and crush them until foam is visible. Then they mix these crushed seeds with sugar syrup, walnuts and pistachios to make a delicious traditional dish. That night they do not sleep until the first light of the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Kermanshah and Ilam, the seeds of sunflowers are thrown into the river so that the year brings rain. Therefore the inhabitants consider this night holy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
