Coffee has a special significance in Kurdish culture. In many Kurdish literary classics, poets such as Melay\u00ea Ciz\u00eer\u00ee<\/strong> (16th & 17th century) and Ehmed\u00ea Xan\u00ee <\/strong>(17th century) mentioned the coffee culture of the Kurds. In addition, Mehm\u00fbd\u00ea Baz\u00eed\u00ee<\/strong> (18th century) describes in his work Traditions and Customs of the Kurds some peculiarities concerning coffee within Kurdish culture. It is possible that the Sorani Kurdish expression No\u015f\u00ee giyanit b\u00eat!<\/em><\/strong> (May it be the drink of your life!), nowadays used as Enjoy your Meal!<\/em><\/strong>, comes from the Kurdish divan culture. This refers to the traditional meeting rooms where mainly men met to talk and drink coffee. The verb no\u015f\u00een <\/em>(to drink) is a synonym for vexwarin <\/em>(to drink).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kurdish coffee (turpentine pistachio) is often confused with chicory coffee<\/em><\/strong> due to misinformation on the internet. Chicory coffee most likely originates from French culture. Chicory is a caffeine-free herb, which makes it a popular coffee substitute. This coffee substitute is prepared from chicory roots. In the 19th and 20th century, French companies had this plant cultivated mainly in Kurdistan. As a result, this coffee substitute was called Chicor\u00e9e au Kurde<\/em><\/strong> (Kurdish chicory) (from the Latin Cichorium intybus<\/em>). Kurdish Coffee<\/strong> – Qehweya kizwanan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kurdish coffee<\/strong> has a special significance in Kurdish cities such as Adiyaman, Antep, Diyarbekir, Batman and Mardin. If you go to these cities, you will get this type of coffee more often. Kurdish coffee is made from the fruits of the turpentine pistachio trees. The small round fruits turn green when they are ripe. The fruits are picked from the trees in the mountains of Kurdistan and then dried. The turpentine pistachios are roasted and ground, similar to coffee beans. Interestingly, the pistachios smell similar to coffee beans after roasting. Kurdish coffee is usually made with milk, but it can also be made with water. This coffee is caffein-free. There is no particular time of day to drink this coffee. If you have guests, it is usually offered before or after the meal. Bitter coffee<\/strong> is made from coffee beans. The beans are roasted twice to intensify the flavour. This coffee is well-known in Kurdish cities such as Antep, Mardin, Urfa and Qamishli. Interesting drinking habits exist around this coffee. It is said that this coffee is served at wedding and funeral ceremonies. The taste of the coffee is similar to espresso, but it is made quite differently. It is drunk without sugar but sometimes a little cardamom is added for flavour. It is served in small cups. After you finish your drink, you don’t put the cup on the table or on the floor. You have to give it back to the person who served it. As long as you have the cup in your hand, more rounds of coffee are poured. If one does not want to continue drinking, the cup must be placed upside down on the coffee provider’s tray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
