According to the information available, literary works have been written in this language since the 16th century. Among the most famous classic kurdish poets are Elî Herîrî, Melayê Cizirî, Feqiyê Teyran, Ehmedê Xanî and Melayê Bateyî. Later, in the 20th century, Kurmanji literature flourished with writers such as Mele Zahirê Tendûrekî, Cegerxwîn, Şêx Tahirê Şoşî, Seyîd ‘Eliyê Findikî and Seydayê Tîrêj, publishing works in dialects which are still spoken today. The launch of Hawar magazine in 1932 was an important step for Kurmanji, because through this magazine, Kurmanji grammar and orthography entered its new era. No matter how much we insist on our respective dialects being “proper Kurmanji”, thanks to Hawar, the path to a unified Kurmanji was opened. Having a unified/standard language could raise the number of speakers by enabling communication across various dialects and thereby increasing the frequency with which Kurmanji is used. This, in turn, would help in protecting the language itself over the following generations, particularly in the face of increasing multilingualism and socio-political restraints on the use of Kurmanji.

Herçiqasî hin kêmasiyên rêbaza Hawarê hebin jî û pêvajoya standardbûna kurmancî bi dawî nebûbe jî, bi saya wê hîmên sereke yên şêweyekî kurmancî bi awayekî serkeftî di nava kurmancan de belav bûne. How accurate is this designation? Based on my recent linguistic investigation of Kurmanji dialects (Baran, 2023), I address this question and present an alternative view. Moreover, I discuss some interesting patterns between dialects derived from the linguistic map I created. The current article is an excerpt from my larger research study, which will be published as a book so that Kurmanji-speakers and people interested in the scientific study of Kurdish can benefit from it.

Ji sala bûrî ve min bi riya înternetê xwe gihande gelek kurmancên ji derdora 200 deverên cida yên kurmancî li wan tê axaftin. The aim was to systematically collect and analyse a list of translations from all participants in order to provide clarification of Kurmanji dialectology and create a linguistic map. This also serves as an attempt at the replication and elaboration upon similar investigations carried out by Öpengin and Haig (2014) and Matras (2017). The present corpus has the largest sample of Kurmanji speakers and covered the most geographical area thus far. Therefore, we now have the opportunity to compare and contrast the many dialects in more detail and with higher geographic specificity.

Di dorê de dixwazim li ser naveroka vê xebatê çend agahiyan bidim: Pêşî, lîsteyeke ji 110 têgehan (hevok û peyv) hate amadekirin ku anegorî encamên wan yek bikaribe devokan ji aliyê rêziman, fonolojî û peyvnasiyê ve analîz bike. Participants were recruited through social media platforms and given a brief background about the study. Whenever possible, the list of items was sent in English, German, Persian or Turkish rather than in standard Kurmanji in order to avoid influencing the authentic translations made by participants. They were also told that the emphasis was not on (in)correct translations but on their authentic manner of speaking. Participants were between 18 and 70 years old, which were split into a younger (18-35) and older generation (36-70) groups. Differentiating between these generations is important due to the influence of digital media and being schooled in a foreign language. It was attempted to obtain translations from both generational groups for each district.

Di vê xebatê de dever û eşîrên beşdaran hatine qeydkirin ku mirov bikaribe hem di navbera deveran de hem jî di navber an jî hundirê eşîran de analîzan bike. For example, one can say that the speakers of the Îzolî tribe in Siverek (Şanlıurfa) and in Kahta (Adıyaman), or the speakers of the Redkî tribe in Muş and in Kars, show some differences in their respective regiolects. Celadet Bedirxan’s (founder of Hawar magazine) family is also from the Cizre area, but he did not grow up there. I named the dialects after respective regions or tribes in order to reflect our culture in the terminology on Kurdish linguistics. Features of phonology, morphosyntax and lexic guided the classification process. Due to the intermixing of dialects and therefore lack of clear boundaries, this was a challenging part of the process. According to the classification, five main groups (Berferatî-Xorasanî, Serhedî-Xerzî, Torî-Deştî, Botî-Goyî, Hekarî-Behdînî) emerged, each consisting of two subgroups. I chose to create a subgroup rather than a new main group when similarities outweighed differences in at least two of the three feature categories phonology, morphosyntax and lexic. Also, under the main groups there are variants (Bilîsî, Çolî, Laçînî, etc.) that I could not clearly attribute to any subgroup. In order to understand this issue, I demonstrate some examples of the Çolî variant in the Torî-Deştî group, which is spoken in several villages of Nusaybin and Midyat.

Az î bâş im. (çolî) –> Ez baş im. (standard) I am fine.
Weke ya torî ye, lê ji aliyê fonolojiyê ve hinekî cida ye.
This is similar to Torî dialect but has a phonological difference.

Az nârim mâlê. (çolî) –> Ez naçim malê. (standard) I am not going home.
Ev weke ya deştî ye, lê ji aliyê fonolojiyê ve hinekî cida ye.
This is similar to Deştî dialect but has a phonological difference.

Mabêja! (çolî) –> Nebêje! (standard) Don’t say!
Ne torî ne jî deştî. Neither Torî nor Deştî.

Az î rim. (çolî) –> Ez diçim. (standard) I am going.
Di vê devokê de di– ya dema niha peyde nabe.
This variant has no preverb di- for the present tense.

Bi saya van nimûneyan mirov dikare bibîne ku di vê devokê de hem taybetiyên torî, hem yên deştî hem jî yên serbixwe hene.

These examples demonstrate that the Çolî variant has both mutual (torî-deştî) and independent features.

Li gorî tevahiya agahiyên xebatê yek dikare bibîne ku ji aliyê coẋrafiyê ve koma botî-goyî ya biçûktirtir û koma berferatî-xorasanî jî koma tewrî gir e. The latter two subgroups includes several further branches of dialect variations. An interesting aspect is also that dialects allow an analysis of the relationship between tribes and the process of their migration. In the Bitlis region, the change of ergativity was already apparent at least 130 years ago, as reflected by the dictionary of Yusuf Diyadin Pasha. This is why among both the young and elderly generations the ergative case has changed to a double oblique. Overall, however, the classification process demonstrated that ergativity is changing among the young generations of other regions.

Te ez dîtim. (standard) You saw me.

Te min dît. (Gurdilan, Sêrt, Xerzan)

Te min dît. (Tetwan, Bilîs)

Te min dî. (nifşa ciwan/young generation, Şîrvan, Xorasana Bakur)

Te min dît. (nifşa ciwan/young generation, Îdir)

Te min dît. (nifşa ciwan/young generation, Qoser, Mêrdîn)

Te ez dîm. (nifşa ‘emrmezin/elderly generation, Şîrvan, Xorasana Bakur)

Te ez dîtim. (nifşa ‘emrmezin/elderly generation, Îdir)

Te ez dîm. (nifşa ‘emrmezin/elderly generation, Qoser, Mêrdîn)

Weke dûmahîk ev dabeşkirina zaravayan ne tenê kifşkirina coẋrafî çareser dike, lê pê re îmkanên balkêş ên dîtina têkiliyên sosyolînguîstîk ên weke tesîra koçberbûna eşîran û herwiha fêhmkirina têkiliyên di navbera wan de jî derdixe holê.

In conclusion, this classification of Kurmanji dialects clarified not only geographics, but also offers exciting possibilities to uncover historic sociolinguistic aspects like the impact of displacement and migration of tribes, as well as their interconnections.

Alfabeya devokên kurmancî / Alphabet of Kurmanji dialects

Li gorî vê xebatê diyar bû ku herî kêm 45 deng di kurmancî de peyde dibin ku çendek ji wan alofon in.
